Shortis – a speedway king

Yarrawonga’s Nathan Shortis is eyeing off a place in the V8 Supercar circuit after taking out second spot in the Victorian GOSSA sedan speedway titles last month.

Shortis (19) grew up on the speedway track with his father and grandfather both veterans of the sport.

He is currently racing in a VY Holden Commodore sedan which he says is “very modified”.

“My pop and I work on it and it seems to be running really well at present,” Shortis said.

“I have been racing since I was 16 years old but I have been involved in the sport all my life.

“I have watched and helped my grandfather and my father when they raced and they have given me lots of hints and tricks.”

Shortis attended Yarrawonga College P-12 where his favourite subject was engineering.

“I am now studying full time at Wodonga TAFE doing a Certificate IV in Motorsports Training Australia,” he said.

“We learn about the mechanics and race techniques and we do work experience at Winton which is just fantastic.”

Racing every second weekend at events all around Victoria and interstate Shortis said his main goal would be to join a V8 Supercar team.

“I would love to get my foot in the door there or even in the US in the Nascar competition,” he said.

“I really admire US stock car racing driver Kyle Larson.

“He seems to have followed the same path as I am by growing up in the sport and working his way up to the top of his field and that is exactly what I want to do.”

Shortis is currently sponsored by Stickemon Signs, Autopro Yarrawonga, SF Photographics and Ellen Joy Cleaning and is looking for another major sponsor so he can move up to the next level of racing.

“Those sponsors have stood by me and have really been so supportive and I appreciate everything they do for me,” Shortis said.

“I would like to get another sponsor or two though, every little bit helps.”

Shortis has two race meetings in May, firstly in Wangaratta on May 7 and then at his home speedway club of Wahgunyah on May 21.
